In the fourth year of its partnership with Bright Tide, HL BaSE hosted a pro bono workshop for the ventures on Bright Tide’s Sustain.AI accelerator programme. The accelerator focuses on connecting innovative AI startups, industry leaders, and investors to drive sustainable change.

“The support Hogan Lovells provide through their BaSE Catalyst programme is second-to-none in helping social enterprises understand and navigate the world of setting up and running your own business, legal compliance, data protection and intellectual property. The Hogan Lovells BaSE Catalyst programme gave us the confidence to develop tools to conserve marine wildlife and accelerate the transition to clean energy technologies at scale.”

Dr. David Gold, CEO, Ecodetect

Our first Catalyst workshop of the year saw lawyers from Hogan Lovells work alongside volunteers from their clients, including Citi, Bank of America, and HSBC. Volunteers heard from and worked with 7 inspiring ventures including:

  • Ecodetect is an advanced marine science and technology company specialising in the development of end-to-end, AI-driven, marine monitoring systems for detecting wildlife near offshore infrastructure using underwater imaging data. Its focus is to provide sustainable solutions to help facilitate the development of clean energy, reduce its environmental impact and accelerate the pathway to net zero.
  • Synature is on a mission to make biodiversity more measurable through innovative bioacoustics technology. It has developed a smart microphone that can record sound in nature and utilises AI to analyse the data and detect the vocalising species, to understand the effects of human activities on ecosystems.
  • ATMO Technologies GmbH works to help corporations accelerate progress towards their net zero targets through carbon insetting. It aims to help farmers implement much needed decarbonisation projects and become climate resilient for the future.
  • Applied Genomics provides environmental DNA-based sampling equipment and analysis services for the quantification of biodiversity in terrestrial, aquatic and marine environments. It is on a mission to build a monitoring network of eDNA data at an unprecedented scale.
  • Wilder Sensing measures biodiversity through its audio recorders, and uses AI tools to analyse and identify which species the audio belongs to. It is creating a detailed, species-level data set which will help users understand and improve the biodiversity on their sites and landscapes.
  • Loamin uses geospatial AI to support environmentally and economically sustainable land use. As the world’s most accurate Large Earth Model, it has built a living simulation of what is happening under and on the Earth’s surface, to generate insights on carbon, biodiversity, and land use for its customers.
  • Inverto Earth is on a mission to restore 1% of our planet’s coasts. Through pioneering drone technology, it has developed a drone-based mangrove planting system to restore the growth of mangroves in difficult-to-grow areas, and uses this technology to monitor the biodiversity in those locations.

“It is clear that Hogan Lovells has incredibly skilled lawyers, both on a professional and on a social level. The legal advice session was tremendously helpful to have a better understanding of product law; we learned how to keep things simple, what pitfalls to avoid and how to set up our product agreements for long-term success. This will help us on our mission to make nature more measurable with our Synature smart mics!”
