GMT - Simon JD Schillebeeckx and Jem Co
Global Mangrove Trust (GMT) is a Singaporean non-profit that operates as a mangrove ecosystem coordinator. GMT was founded by academics Ryan Merrill and Simon Schillebeeckx in 2017 and quickly started collaborating with DBS Bank on the development of a blockchain architecture to bring transparency to reforestation and conservation projects. In 2019, we were incubated with the Global Policy Initiative India and have since been endorsed by the German Development Bank, with whom we are exploring project development options. While we initially pursued a pure P2P model of micro-funding (which is currently housed in our social enterprise Handprint), we are now pursing an institutional approach and have partnered with commodity broker Marex and remote sensing and machine learning specialist Kumi Analytics to develop space-based carbon estimation technology and liquid financial products. We are also supporting OxCarbon, a spinoff from the Oxford Smith School, in its development of a novel carbon crediting agency.
